"Juneteenth" (June 19,1865), commonly known as Freedom Day, commemorates the abolition of slavery as well as the emancipation of African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America, specifically in Texas. The Emancipation Proclamation was signed two years prior to Juneteenth. While extremely significant, it also shows how freedom, equality, and justice have always been delayed for African Americans. Progress has been made in the pas 155 year, but there are still considerable hurdles and boundaries that ought to be broken down. Most importantly, Juneteenth is a day of celebration, as it has great historical significance and represents the resilience, determination, and courage of a group of people striving for change. Today we will join in the celebration of freedom, pay homage to those who helped pave the way for that freedom, and look to strive for equality among all walks of life.
We at CrossFit Norwalk are here to promote equality within, with the hope that it expands outside our four walls. We will continue to make sure that CrossFit Norwalk is an inclusive environment and strive to do more for the black community.
